Let's learn

about early

Technology

Task One: Early Technolgy
One of the first ways of teaching ideas was through speaking. A long time ago, stories, history, and news were shared mostly by talking. To learn, people had to memorize by listening.

Storytelling is still used today in Aboriginal culture as a way to teach.

Print Technology

Creating scrolls and reading from them was another early form of teaching and learning. It took a lot of time to write the scrolls by hand, so not many were made for people to read from.

Papyrus made from the papyrus plant was often used as paper for scrolls.

Letters were often hand-painted onto scrolls and pages using carbon black ink. This was made by burning a tree and using the charcoal with oil to form an ink.

New Invention!

The Printing Press

The Printing Press was invented in the 1400s – about 600 years ago! It used individual letter presses arranged to stamp words into paper with ink. In the time it would take someone to write out a few pages, the printing press could print out thousands of pages with perfect lettering.

Step 2: Time yourself as you stamp your name neatly 5 times on a piece of paper.

Step 3: Which time was the fastest?

Books

This photo is a printing press block for a single page. This block was used to print many copies of this page in a very short amount of time. Before this, to copy a single page by hand might take 20-30 minutes. Using the printing press, this page could be printed in 1-2 minutes.

The Printing Press was used to make copies of the Bible at first, but was also used to print scientific, medical, and historical books. This made more books available to more people!
